The difference is that rather than being bolted down or installed directly onto the floor beneath they traditionally install underneath the edge of one of the materials locking into place.

I m installing some 3 4 pre finished brazilian teak flooring in to a room that previously had carpeting and is adjacent to a room that currently has 3 4 oak flooring with roughly a five foot doorway between the two rooms the carpeted room seems to have 5 8 plywood over the 3 4 floor sheathing.
Subfloor 1 2 plywood underlayment and ditra are under the threshold as well.

The standard for what is acceptable tile lippage is ansi a108 02 4 3 7.
The height difference is so large that i can see about a half inch of mortar and the orange ditra.
For tiles that have a grout joint width of 1 16 to 1 8 the allowable lippage is 1 32 plus the inherent warpage in the tile.
You can deal with it easy enough using a belt sander and a piece of matching hardwood.

With the carpet out there is a 1 8 difference in height between the two rooms.
Reducer strips operate in a similar fashion to ramps in that they reduce the height from one flooring material to the other.
What would be considered too large of a height difference between rooms and or what is considered acceptable and what would be the best way to handle the transition between the different levels.
